The Cherokee’s Beloved Woman/War Woman Nancy Ward is one of the few women to fight alongside men during periods of war. As her story goes, Ward fought beside her husband Kingfisher during the Battle of Taliwa (1755) against the Muscogee Indians. Ward chewed Kingfisher’s bullets during the battle, as this made them explode once they hit their target. When the Muscogee’s killed Ward’s husband, Ward took up his rifle and lead the Cherokees to victory. Ward later remarried an English trader, and as the Revolutionary War drew near, Ward became an advocate of peace, especially between the Cherokees and the Americans.
