Read a second text about the Lost Colony
Growth rings in the trunks of trees can provide clues about past environmental
conditions, which may shed light on historical mysteries. For example, the ancient
cypress trees on Roanoke Island are over one thousand years old. Their growth rings
reveal that a terrible drought occurred in the late 1500s, with the most extreme
conditions occurring in 1587. This was exactly the same year that a group of English
colonists settled on Roanoke Island. The super drought would almost certainly have led to
life-threatening shortages of water and food. Indeed, when the colony's governor, John
White, returned from England in 1590, he found the settlement empty. The English never
found their "Lost Colony," but the cypress trees hint at a tragic end.
