The Babylonian empire had already established city-states in the Middle East, but the Hittites arrived with the intention of capturing land and establishing colonies. Because they could manufacture iron for weapons, the Hittites possessed a strong military. They were attacked by Mediterranean invaders known as sea people, as well as nomad tribes from the east, when famine struck them around 1200 B.C.
