During the debates over ratifying the Constitution, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay were Federalists. In other words, they supported the Constitution and thought it should be ratified. Thomas Jefferson, George Clinton, and Patrick Henry were Anti-Federalists. They didn't support the ratification of the Constitution because they felt it gave the Federal government too much power and did not protect individual rights (e. g. freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of press, and more).
