Understand that poetry is a unique expression of feelings, ideas, or events
Understand that poetry often uses symbolism to convey a message
Poetry is a method of expression that is unlike any other form of literature. Poetry discusses feeling, ideas, or events. a poem may retell a story from history or legend. It may present a simple image that represents or ‘symbolizes’ an emotion or captures one moment in time. Some poems rhyme but some do not. The types of poems that we are going to examine for this topic are:
Ballad
Lyric
Haiku
Ode
Elegy
