Christopher Columbus sailed in a southwesterly direction across the Atlantic to find new water route to Asia. He knew that the world was round and thus realised that by sailing west in place of sailing east around the coast of Africa, he would reach his destination. Infact, Spain agreed to fund his voyage because the newly discovered sea route would help them compete with Portugal.

He thought he would find an alternate trade route to Asia, but in reality he discovered the Carribean islands.
