After Alexander the Great's father, Philip II, conquered Greece in 338 BCE, he compelled loyalty by means of the Corinthian League. Using the powerful Greco-Macedonian army Philip built, Alexander defeated Darius III at the Battle of Gaugamela in 331 BCE. By 327 BCE Alexander had crossed the mountains in what is now , moving into the plains of India the following year.
