One of the new republic's most important institutions was called the Senate. It was the only institution that could start the process of making or changing laws and proposing government plans. Only people called patricians could be senators. Many patricians gave several reasons for why they should be the only ones allowed in the Senate. Read this summary of common patrician arguments. Then answer the question below.
The Senate should be limited to patricians for many reasons. Firstly, patricians come from the oldest and best families in Rome. Some of them are relatives of Romulus himself! Patricians also own most of Rome's land. Who else but patricians will care the most about keeping it safe, then? Also, remember who stood up to the cruel king Tarquinius—patricians! That's why only patricians should be trusted to be Rome's senators.
