In the late 1800s, a politician named Ignatius Donnelly wrote a book entitled Atlantis, the Antediluvian World. Donnelly strongly believed that Plato's description of Atlantis was historical fact, not fiction. In this book, Donnelly claimed to use
his expertise in zoology and geology to locate Atlantis. According to him, it could be found west of the Strait of
Gibraltar, in the Azores Islands. He believed these islands were actually the peaks of the mountains described by Plato
and the myth.
