The Americans were unprepared because they underestimated the guerilla tactics of Vietnam and did not go through the history of Vietnam of resisting invaders. If they did have an idea of what opponents they were facing, they would have many tactics to fight this problem off or train soldiers to be more suitable for this war.

Firstly, the Vietnam war was a major war that involved guerilla tactics which the Americans were not ready for. As well as this, the Americans had not faced this type of warfare before and much of their military technology would most likely not be able to face a new type of tactic.
