After none of the candidates recieved enough votes to win the election, even though Andrew Jackson won the most, everyone put their outcome into the hands of the House of Representatives. It was believed by many that Henry Clay convinced Congress to elect John Quincy Adams instead of Andrew Jackson. Jackson and his supportors called this a "corrupt bargain."
