There were more than 5,000 battles fought between the Union (North) and the Confederacy (South). Some historians spend their entire lives studying these Civil War battles. Today, you will learn about just eight important battles through reading primary and secondary sources. A primary source is information created by someone who witnessed a historical event first hand.
A secondary source is historical information by someone who did not witness the event.
Read through the Civil War Battles Challenge (Sides A and B). For each battle, you will learn about when it happened, where it happened, the number of casualties, which side won, and why the battle is important to remember.
A casualty is a military person lost through death, injury, sickness, capture, or being missing in action.
For each battle, there is one piece of information missing! Working with a partner, use the clues to find the information (Slides 5-12). Each clue will give you one piece of missing information.
