THE SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD There have been many lists of the Wonders of the World. The first known list was called the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which was based on guidebooks used by the ancient Greeks and only included places around the Mediterranean rim. The Greeks chose the number seven because they thought it represented perfection and plenty. In 2001 a Swiss corporation called New7Wonders Foundation launched an initiative to choose a new list from among two hundred existing monuments. In 2007, one hundred million people voted online for their choices of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The results were:
