Read the following two selections from the article: The people of the Middle Ages had squandered the advancements of their predecessors, this argument went, and mired themselves instead in what 18-th century English historian Edward Gibbon called "barbarism and religion."

Poets, scientists and philosophers wrote thousands of books (on paper, a Chinese invention that had made its way into the Islamic word by the eighth century). Scholars translated Greek, Iranian, and Indian texts into Arabic. Inventors devised technologies like the pinhole camera, soap, windmills, surgical instruments, an early flying machine and the system of numerals that we use today.

How effective is the juxtaposition between the two selections?

A: Very effective; it illustrates the contrast between prevailing myths about the progress of ideas in the Middle Ages with the realities

B: Mostly effective: It demonstrates a contrast between two different effects of the Middle Ages on modern thought and scholarship.

C: Somewhat effective; it illustrates ideas about the Middle Ages that are different but not directly opposed to one another
