Tandem Computers is a computer system manufacturer that is tolerant of commercial transaction processing application errors that require maximum uptime and zero data loss. This company was founded by Jimmy Treybig. It is now the server division of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, after Hewlett-Packard acquired Compaq and divided Hewlett Packard into HP Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
The Tandem NonStop system uses a number of identical independent processors and redundant storage devices and controllers to provide automatic high-speed "failover" in case of hardware or software failure. To contain the scope of failure and corrupted data, this multi-computer system does not have a shared central component, not even main memory. Conventional multi-computer systems all use shared memory and work directly on shared data objects. Instead, the NonStop processor works by exchanging messages across reliable fabrication, and the software takes periodic snapshots for possible recovery of program memory status.
In addition to helping failures properly, the design of "not sharing" message systems is also very good for the largest commercial workloads. Each doubling the number of processors will double the system throughput, up to a maximum configuration of 4000 processors. Conversely, the performance of conventional multiprocessor systems is limited by the speed of some shared memory, buses, or switches. Adding more than 4-8 processors that way does not provide further system improvements. NonStop systems are more often purchased to meet scaling requirements than extreme fault tolerance.
