The Aztecs strategy was very effective, first of all, they demanded tributes, and loyalty to avoid destruction. But when those settlements rejected their proposal they conquered with military action. After they did it, they ruled for a while and removed the major influencers of the settlement, then they placed new ones of that same settlement and left them with their initial proposal. May accepted like the Tlaxcaltecas, but many others didn't like the Mayas and they destroyed everything they could of those who resisted.
