The colonization of North America began in the 16th century, with groups of Europeans arriving in what was previously Native American territory. The relationship between these two groups varied greatly depending on the people, the region and the time period we look at. However, both during times of cooperation as during times of conflict, Europeans and Native Americans intermarried and exchanged many cultural traits. With the rise of the slave trade, Africans arrived to North America, bringing their own cultural traditions with them. The contribution of all these peoples created new cultures and societies in the United States.
