In 1846 the Navajos attacked Socorro. Kearny asked Doniphan to make an agreement with the Navajo, but two months later Doniphan told the Navajo that all their land belonged to the United States government. Prior treaties said that the Navajo could not make war on the Americans, but Americans could make war on the Navajo. Despite the treaties, Native American raids continued through 1849 by the Navajo, Apache, Comanche, Ute, and Kiowa in an attempt to keep their land.
