Oceans and rivers in these times were the highways of early living. Before there were roads, waterways were the most efficient way for travel. 

This travel also includes other things such as trade. As I'm sure you know, trade was an enormous factor in early colonial life. 

We got supplies and necessities by trading. Trading with other nations is how we got certain items that we could not make, or grow in our current location.

It's thanks to waterways that we were able to have such an efficient way of delivering supplies and items. This was also good for the economy. 

As for fishing, of course, people fished in oceans and rivers! Food is one of those key necessities, and fish was a great source of nutrition.
