Why was the social structure of europe challenged by the growing number of free townspeople and the changing economy

Europe's social structure was challenged by the growing number of free townspeople because they could not get a hold of everything already. With the addition of the increase of population, it is hard to divide resources and to  everyone and this in return challenged the economy of the continent.
