The Battle of the Coral Sea was a series of naval battles between the Allies and the Japanese Empire. The battle was fought between May 4 and 8, 1942 in Northeast Australia. It was the first naval combat in the world where ships did not fire directly at each other. The aircraft carrier was used exclusively for offensive purposes, as it was where most of the aircraft departed on an attacking mission against the enemy fleet. It is also the largest battle ever fought off the coast of Australia.  

It was an important battle because it was the first major defeat for the Japanese Empire during WWII and also because the battle made it impossible for the Japanese forces to invade Port Moresby.
