What caused the great schism?
1.martin luther's ninety-five theses caused a rift in the catholic church, and the split caused french and italian cardinals to elect different popes.
2.henry viii demanded an annulment for his marriage, but the italian pope refused. henry chose a new pope who would agree to the annulment.
3.french cardinals felt they had been pressured into electing an italian pope, so they declared his papacy invalid and elected a french pope.
4.the invention of the printing press made the bible accessible to commoners, and they demanded the right to elect a second pope.
