Why is it important to apply chronological thinking when reading a historical narrative

Historical narratives have a lot of context. Chronological thinking starts from beginning to end; the author always starts a story from beginning to end and starting in order is important to context since the author is trying to relay his story to the audience. If the author jumps out of sequence, the audience will get confused and the message could indeed become lost.
