Similarly the English Kings wanted to expand their hold on France and at times even placed claims to the French throne. Thus the Hundred years War that broke out was caused by the rivalry between the English Kings and the French Kings, the underlying issue being whether France was to be ruled by rulers of French origin or of English origin. Ultimately the French came out successful as national pride and emerging French patriotism and nationalism were in their favour.
