In his first annual message to Congress on December 8, 1829, Jackson argued that the best place for indigenous tribes would be the lands west of the Mississippi River. Congress, in turn, was in the process of creating its own legislation regarding the relocation of indigenous people. There were many congressmen who supported Jackson's goals. On May 26, 1830 the Congress approved the Indian Removal Act, legislation that Jackson signed. The law gave the President the power to negotiate treaties where lands were purchased in the east in exchange for land to the west, outside the American border. The passage of the bill was Jackson's first legislative triumph and marked the true entrance of the Democratic Party to American society.
