Martin Luther King Jr. was a pivotal role in the fight for civil rights in the 1960s, and his "I Have a Dream" speech and "Letter from Birmingham Jail" letter demonstrate his worthiness of the title.

In each of these works, Dr. King employs logos (logical persuasion) and pathos (emotional appeal) to persuade those who were pro-segregation and anti-civil rights to change their minds.

Dr. King employs the aspects of ethos and pathos in his argument for the American dream by being viewed as credible by his audience and by leveraging the hope and determination associated with the American Dream to persuade the audience with these emotions.Pathos is employed throughout King's speech and is the most successful appeal since he is appealing to people's inner morality and providing optimism and a "let's-fix-this" attitude toward the Civil Rights Movement to his fellow African Americans. In the end, King's argument is strengthened by his use of pathos.
