What were nixon's policies toward china and the soviet union? why were they so surprising at the time?

Nixon wanted to have peace with them, and so he visited China and USSR to try to have ceasefires and treaties (in a sense). This was suprising, because just before, they had a cold war with the USSR, and basically most of their communication was cut off as they were fighting each other
