What purposes does the constitution serve in america (past, present and future)?

The constitution has like rules that define what can be done on the government. It has helped leaders know how to rule the country, but not to do certain things to prevent impeachment. It also helps judges when dealing with federal cases. The constitution has also served the bases for the constitutions of other countries.
