How did the first two major american political parties differ.

The first political parties in the history of America, emerged after the presidency of Washington, were the Federalist Party and the Democratic-Republican Party.

The Federalist Party advocated a strong and comprehensive federal government, with a very strong power over state governments. The federal government that this party proposed should be responsible for the entire national economy, both internally and externally, for which it intended to create a central bank and impose tariffs on the states. It was an elitist party, with broad support in the north of the country.

The Democratic-Republican Party, on the other hand, supported greater autonomy of the states, conceiving the federal government as a binding entity but not dominant in the national order. Therefore, it did not agree with federalist economic policies, which took autonomy from the states. This party had great support in the southern states, farmers and working classes.
