Before WW1 alliances were key so you can talk about Germany being in an alliance with Austria Hungary caused a major conflict when Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated and the alliances went against each other,

Due to German imperialism Germany wanted to have more territory and gain more money even before WW1. You can say that increased imperialism fueled the flames of WW1 because Germany's neighbors were preparing for imminent war.
