Why would seeking citizenship have been important to many foreign migrants? it would prove that they had completely given up their ties, sentiments, and loyalty toward their homelands. it was still denied to many african americans, especially in the south, and foreign migrants sought white privilege. it represented being accepted as american, with all the associated rights and responsibilities, including voting. it required that they follow certain procedures that they defined as basic elements of being american.
