The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were eight international development goals established by the United Nations in 2000. The goals were to be accomplished in 2015, and all 191 United Nations members committed to achieving them.

The goals were very important in encouraging the reduction of global poverty all over the world. The most successful countries were China and India. In China, the poverty population decreased from 452 million to 278 million. Thanks to this, the population of the world living under $1.25 a day halved to 21%, or 1.2 billion people.

Other countries that achieved great progress were Brazil, Nepal and Bangladesh.
