Mirabeau Lamar (August 16, 1798-19 December 1859) was the second president of the Republic of Texas, succeeding Sam Houston. Lamar supported the independence and had a distinguished participation in the battle of San Jacinto, his performance in this battle allowed a rapid rise in the politics of the newly born republic, eventually occupying the position of Secretary of War in the interim government and the one of vice-president under the government of Sam Houston. For the second presidential election he obtained the almost unanimous support of the population and was thus elected president.
