The 1950s was a time of stark tradition. The men were considered the breadwinners, and women were the housemaids. Women did not have the same rights as men, such as the right to vote, but they had been receiving more support for women's rights, and often worked with African Americans to fight for civil rights together. This was a result of World War II, in which the men were the soldiers, while the women stayed at home and worked on the industrial side of war, manufacturing medicine, weapons, and food supply for the men in Europe and the Pacific.
