Typewriters

The first commercially successful typewriter was the Sholes and Glidden typewriter (or Remington No. 1). It was created by American inventors Christopher Latham Sholes, Samuel W. Soule and Carlos S. Glidden.

The machine was the first one to use a four-rowed QWERTY keyboard. Although its adoption was slow due to the lack of an established market, they soon became common office fixtures and contributed to the creation of clerical jobs. These were particularly beneficial to women, as they were most often hired to operate the new machines.
