An archaeological site is a zone where there is a concentration of archaeological rests (material, structural, and environmental rests). These are rests of human activities of the past and it is constituted by the presence of ancient human artifacts, structural elements, soil occupation, and other anomalies.

Comparing and studying the relative locations of these sites reveals how ancient people used to live, the main characteristics of their architecture, art, cultures, and worldviews, what was the basis for their economy (agriculture, trade), and how ancient civilizations came to be.
