The Gupta Empire was an ancient Indian empire, which existed from approximately 320 to 550 and covered much of the Indian subcontinent.  The peace and prosperity created under the leadership of the guptas allowed the search for artistic and scientific efforts. This period is called the Golden Age of India and was marked by extensive inventions and discoveries in the areas of science and technology, engineering, art, dialectics, literature, logic, mathematics, astronomy, religion and philosophy that crystallized elements that are generally known as Hindu culture.

It is believed that it is due to the Gupta Empire, the invention of the concepts of zero and infinity and the symbols for what would come to be known as the Arabic numerals (1-9).

The empire came to an end with the attack of White Huns from Central Asia.
