It's 2017 now so it was 2517 years ago to 500bc and 1517 to 500AdD

B.C. means all years before year 1 (which is the year Jesus was born). A.D. means all years after year 1. If we want to find how long ago 500 BC was we have to add 500 to the year it is now. Think of all BC numbers as negative numbers on a number line. The absolute value of -500 and 2017 is 2017+500=2517. So 500 BC was 2517 years ago. Now to find out how long ago 500 AD was simply subtract 500 from 2017. 2017-500=1517 years.
