The 13 colonies were fighting for liberty, free press, right of speech, lower taxes, and many other rights. The American rebels or revolutionaries fought against the far superior British forces for 8 years and eventually they defeated them at the battles of Yorktown, Charleston, and New York. The rebels called the new nation the United States of America. The freest nation in the world.
