Mexico is a place-name of Mexican-Nahuatl origin whose meaning is discussed. Derived from the Nahuatl word "Mēxihco", which designated the capital of the Mexicas. According to Bernardino de Sahagún (16th century) -who is the oldest documentary source-, the word would mean "the place of Mexi", of "Mexitl" where "metl" (maguey), "citli" / "xitli" (hare) and «-co» (locative).

The popular belief says that the colors of the Mexican flag originated in the flag of the Army of the Three Guarantees or "Flag Trigarante", in 1821, but as the form or method of selection is at least uncertain.
