The mountain range in Northern India is the Himalayas.  It is important to India because it serves as a protective barrier from invaders, save India from cold and dry winds from Central Asia (without it, it would be a dry desert), provide wood for houses from its forests and vegetation and water from runoff from mountains and the rich soil from the bottom of the mountain (more above is just ice), the source of water for North India, tourism, healing medicine, and good training for the Indian army.
