- Both were only allowed to lead their own race (black generals led black soldiers, white generals led white soldiers)

- Both tested by the same categories

White Soldiers :

- were always allowed to join

- generally in combat and on frontlines

- were paid $13 a month (no deduction)

- never had to worry about having insufficient things
