He also was overwhelmed by the reception he got at the party’s nominating convention in Philadelphia — elsewhere in the country, he was viewed as a war hero and the bosses in other states didn’t have anything against him. Western delegations were particularly fond of him — he had spent two years after his first wife’s death as a cowboy in the Dakota Territory and could talk to westerners in ways no banker or magnate could.
