The Chicano and African American civil rights movements share several similar factors but are also different enough to be able to contrast them. Both movements are rooted in discrimination as it pertains to labor. The Chicano civil rights movement fought for the rights of migrant workers, while the African American civil rights movement had come to light for still facing discrimination after the ban of slavery. The difference being that migrant workers were being paid, while African Americans faced no pay, a longer time period of radical discrimination, and harsher effects of racism. Both movements had notable speaking figures, the Chicano movement having Cesar Chavez and the African American movement having Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Both used similar protest strategies, including boycotts. Both had faced segregated school systems.
