Why are people in the United States allowed to criticize the government?

1st Amendment, freedom of speech (though, religion, right, etc). Some acceptations are made if its dangerous for the union or sum I think but overall I believe that's the only reason.

most are appointed by the president and confirmed by a vote in the senate. however, appeals court judges appoint federal bankruptcy judges, and district judges appoint federal magistrate judges. the qualifications for these positions vary depending on the preferences of the person reviewing nominees.
