A key problem both the Allies and Central Forces faced during
World War I, was how to successfully attack and remove an
enemy who was hiding in trenches. In the trenches soldiers were
well protected from gunfire and shelling. This encouraged a
German, named Richard Fiedler, to develop a new weapon that
could reach into the trenches and through many barriers. It was
called the flammenwerfer, or known today as a flamethrower.
Using pressurized air and nitrogen, this machine sprayed a
stream of burning oil. The burning oil was sticky and adhered to
people and things, making it nearly impossible to extinguish the
fire. The small version of the machine was able to spray this
sticky, burning oil over 60 feet.
The German army begin using flamethrowers in the early
stages of the war, starting in 1914. At the start of a German
attack, flamethrowers were used as a way to clear forward
defenders who were hiding in trenches. Each Flammenwerfer
was handled by two men. In battle, there were often six groups
of flamethrowers, who worked together to rain down a fiery wall
of flames on the enemy. The flamethrower brought terror to the
British and French soldiers. It was seen as a horrible and
painful way to die.
Early on, in several battles, Germany had success using flamethrowers. The flamethrower teams were able to clear out trenches allowing the infantry to overtake the enemy and the trenches. Because of this success, the German army expanded use of the flamethrower during the war and developed even larger, more lethal models. Witnessing the success of the German’s flamethrowers, the British and French rushed to copy them and began producing their own models. Though both, the Allies and Central Powers would use these fire machines throughout the war, Germany used them more often and with greater success. Also, toward the end of the war, both sides began placing flamethrowers on tanks.
