A local news station in Santiago, Chile broadcast the following graphic explaining the impact El Nino has on the local weather conditions.

Using the information from Figure 1, along with the image above, which of the following is most likely contributing to the development of the El Nino weather pattern? (SC.6.E.7.3)
A. Over the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a low-pressure system formed pushing air up into the atmosphere at its center.
B. Over the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a low-pressure system formed pushing air down towards the surface at its center.
C. Over the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a high-pressure system formed pushing air up into the atmosphere at its center.
D. Over the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a high-pressure system formed pushing air down towards the surface at its center.

The Peruvian Current, which is located on Figure 2, plays a vital role in all the interactions within Earth’s Spheres. One consequence of an El-Nino is a weaker Peruvian Current. Which of the following is a direct result of a weaker Peruvian Current? (SC.6.E.7.3)
A. A decrease in pressure in the western Pacific Ocean.
B. A decrease in air temperature off the coast of Chile, South America.
C. An increase in the amount of cold water transported to the Equator.

Despite the Pacific Ocean being thousands of miles away, changes in the Pacific Ocean can impact local weather in Florida. Below is a map of the southeastern United States listing weather conditions during a previous winter.

Using the map above, along with the information from figures 1 and 2, which of the options below best explains the reason for the cooler temperatures, a wet winter, and increased storm chances in Florida? (SC.6.N.1.1)
A. La Nina, caused by a variable Pacific Jet Stream
B. La Nina, caused by increased strength of the Trade Winds
C. El Nino, caused by an extended, amplified Pacific Jet Stream
D. El Nino, caused by an increase in the strength of the Peruvian Current

Not very often does this desert located in South America bloom with flowers. The blooming of flowers in the Atacama Desert occurs whenever there are El Nino conditions in the Pacific Ocean. In the United States, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) declares an El Nino when monthly sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean warm half a degree Celsius above normal. This results in a change in the jet stream which influences changes in temperature and precipitation patterns all over the United States, as well as other parts of the world. These changes in the jet stream can be observed in Figure 1, below.

Knowing this information, forecasters monitor whether the atmosphere is responding to the warming ocean causing tropical trade winds to weaken. This can influence not only the equatorial current but the Peruvian Current off the coast of Chile as well. This can be seen by comparing the images in figure 2.
