1. What were Lincoln's thoughts about slavery when he became President?
He wanted to end slavery, regardless of how it might affect the Union.
He feared that freeing the slaves would cause some states in the North to secede.
He would keep slavery in place if it meant saving the Union.
Despite enormous political pressure, he never changed his mind about slavery.
