Early in the war, why did US president FDR feel the US couldn't fight a two front war?

He felt that Germany was too strong and so was Japan.

He felt that the US needed to stay out of the war until we could afford to fight on two
fronts.

He hoped that Japan would eventually turn on Germany.

Due to weaknesses, he wanted to join Britain and liberate Europe first.
