Goal: Write a five point progressive manifesto in conjunction with your teammates. 1. Each team member should report to the group about who wrote their article and summarize what it said.

G. Theodore Roosevelt, “Civic Helpfulness,” 1900.

2. Adopting the position of your documents’ authors, discuss what you think you have in common with the positions of your fellow teammates. For example, what do you see as the PROBLEMS that need to be solved? What do you see as the SOLUTIONS to these problems?

3. Write five “manifesto statements” that best portray the beliefs and concerns of this collection of authors.

3. Each statement must reflect the opinions or observations of at least two of the sources; note which authors are associated with each statement.

4. Progressives shared certain theories about the actual state of American society and about themselves. List the basic assumptions that you found in the documents used for your manifesto. For example, local government has an obligation to provide a clean city.
